Top Drive Saver Subs

Top Drive Saver Subs function as sacrificial components in oil and gas drilling. Designed, engineered, and manufactured in-house, they protect the considerably more expensive top drive unit from the wear and tear associated with the repeated connection and disconnection of the drill pipe. By absorbing the stresses from these operations, the saver subs prolong the lifespan of the top drive and significantly reduce repair and maintenance costs.

Sub-drill’s Top Drive Saver Subs are available for all top drive applications and are manufactured with both splined and slick connections to meet the specific requirements of each drilling rig’s top drive system.

Splined vs Slick Saver Subs

Splined: This design is used to match top drives that transfer torque through a splined connection. It offers a stronger, more reliable connection, with the load distributed across multiple teeth for a longer fatigue life compared to a keyed shaft.

Slick (or conventional): This style is used for kelly systems or older top drives that do not use a splined mechanism.

Enhanced Operational Efficiency

The use of a saver sub contributes to overall drilling efficiency, which further adds to cost savings.

Supports high-torque drilling: For advanced drilling techniques like directional or horizontal drilling, the saver sub handles the extreme torsional loads, ensuring reliable power transmission from the top drive to the drill string.

Prevents thread damage downhole: A worn-out saver sub can damage the threads of every piece of drill pipe it connects with, leading to weaker connections downhole. By replacing the sub in a timely manner, you protect your entire, expensive drill string.

Minimised Non-Productive Time

Faster, easier replacement: A damaged saver sub can be replaced much more quickly than having to perform maintenance or repairs on the top drive itself.

Prevents major failures: By preventing premature wear on the top drive, saver subs reduce the risk of more catastrophic failures that would require a complete rig shutdown for major repairs.
